More than four-in-10 Britons have turned to baking to get them through the lockdown according to ONS, and every single one of BBC Good Food’s top-ten-viewed videos in April were related to baking or bread. So it’s hardly surprising that British supermarket shelves have been stripped of every type of flour and baking ingredient since March - including precious gluten-free, vegan and dairy-free ingredients that many people with food allergies rely on.
The great news is, after a period of lockdown-induced hibernation, our online store is back in business and better than ever, and our baking section is bursting with free-from flours, mixes and finishing touches. Here are some highlights to whet your appetite:
Gluten-free flour - plain and simple. Glebe Farm has a range of good quality gluten-free flours made with potato starch and rice flour or oats that are as good for bread as they are for cakes - and everything in-between. Or for maximum fresh bread goodness with minimum effort, try Davina Steel gluten-free white bread mix.
Flatbread, foccacia and rye - oh my. If the time has come to take your bread baking up a notch, we have a great range of delicious specialist, free-from bread ingredients and mixes like Ranas Bakery Gluten-Free Italian Sourdough mix, Sweetpea Pantry Vegan Pizza Dough Mix or Davina Steel Garlic & Rosemary Foccacia to name just a few.
Sweet treats. Our collection of mouthwatering mixes and ingredients should keep you busy for a while. Try Moo Free’s Vegan & Gluten-Free Chocolate Baking Drops, Sweetpea Pantry’s Gluten-Free Carrot Muffin Mix, Middleton Foods’ Chocolate Fudge Brownie Mix or Davina Steel Gluten-Free Scones - scoffed with butter or jam while still warm. Mmm.
Finishing touches. Pudding wouldn’t be pudding without the finishing touches. Just Wholefoods’ Gluten-Free & Vegan Custard Powder contains natural vanilla flavour and is perfection in a jug.
